More troops in Afghanistan, greater fear of wider war
THE WHITE HOUSEThe deployment of thousands of U.S. Marines on the ground in Afghanistan may be the prelude to an even wider war of conquest rather than the conclusion of Americas war on terrorism, President George W. Bush warned.  The American people must understand that weve got a long way to go in order to achieve our objective in this theater, Mr. Bush told reporters during a Rose Garden greeting for two aid workers rescued recently from Afghanistan. more

Mumia loses appeal
PHILADELPHIAThe day before Thanksgiving, a Philadelphia judge denied a state court appeal for Mumia Abu-Jamal.  Mr. Jamal was convicted of killing city police officer Daniel Faulker in 1982 and given the death penalty. Since that time Mr. Jamal, an award-winning journalist and ex-Black Panther, has emerged as an international cause for death penalty opponents, who argue he did not have a fair trial and is innocent. more

Russell Simmons tells it all
NEW YORKIn his new tell-all book, rap mogul Russell Simmons has a simple message: You dont have to spend years doing sex and drugs to get what you want out of life. That message from the 44-year-old chairman/CEO of Rush Communications, founder and/or co-founder of several businessesincluding Def Jam Records, Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam, Phat Farm clothing, and Rush advertisingis far different from the material bling-bling excesses often depicted in rap videos and music. more

THE WHITE HOUSELife for the people of Haitithe poorest in the Western Hemisphereis spiraling downward toward horrendous outcomes, the 38-member Congressional Black Caucus warned President George W. Bush in a letter requesting a meeting. Mr. Bush is very attentive to the concerns raised by individual members of the Black Caucus, presidential Press Secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters Nov. 20, but he offered no promise that a meeting would be scheduled and no answer to one of the chief complaints of CBC members.more

Minnesota's Somali community denounces 'racist' closure of money transfer network

MINNEAPOLIS (NNPA)The Somali community is up in arms about the United States governments attempt to label them as supporters of terrorism. At a rally, speaker after speaker denounced these efforts as racist as well as an infringement on their human rights. On Nov. 7, the government shut down several Somali-run businesses in Minneapolis and other cities across the U.S. that provide money transfer services for many Somalis and other East African immigrants who help support their families and relatives in Somalia and refugee camps in Kenya. more

BET survey examines today's Black attitudes

Black America needs more money, sees racism as a continuing problem, sees education as crucial to success and are worried about the future of the next generation, according to a BET.com/CBS News survey. Alongside outside challenges, the survey of 724 adults conducted in September, also found harsh criticism of Black men for abandoning their families and nearly 40 percent of respondents felt out-of-wedlock births were always wrong. more
