(FinalCall.com) -- Black America needs more
money, sees racism as a continuing problem, sees education as crucial to
success and are worried about the future of the next generation,
according to a BET.com/CBS News survey. Alongside outside challenges,
the survey of 724 adults conducted in September, also found harsh
criticism of Black men for abandoning their families and nearly 40
percent of respondents felt out-of-wedlock births were always wrong.
Nearly 70 percent of respondents said Blacks are too
tied to consumerism in America, the survey said.
The findings of the BET.com/CBS News survey, which was
partially funded by the Pew Center for Civic Journalism, will be
explored as part of a year-long look at the Black family and the subject
of a series of special reports to be featured on BET.com and BET Nightly
News. The reports, entitled "Under One Roof," will run every Tuesday.
According to BET.com, the reports will attempt to engage
the Black community in a dialog about where the community and families
want to go in the future. Plans also call for presenting the
Congressional Black Caucus with the findings at the end of the year, for
possible action.
The survey reaffirmed the belief that Blacks still
consider themselves strangers in America, targeted by racism, a lack of
economic opportunity and the affects of slavery.
Still, Black parents believe greater educational
achievement can bring progress and fear the lack of education is a major
threat to moving forward as a group. But a slight majority opposes using
vouchers or public money to fund private and religious education.
