U.S. war on terrorism targets Somalia
Reconnaissance flights have increased over Somalia, Bush
administration officials announced Jan. 3, saying the U.S. was looking
for signs that Saudi-exile Osama bin Laden and the Al Qaeda network
might have set up a base in the African country. Warshipseither from the United States or its allieswere cruising
the Somali coast at Final Call press time, ready to board cargo
vessels suspected of containing terrorists heading from Asia to Africa.
Yemen is also on alert. "This pretext of the war on terrorism is allowing the U.S. to
exercise a kind of imperialistic foreign policy for which it felt
restrained by negative international reaction," commented Chicago-based
columnist Salim Muwakkil.
Indictments
in JDL bombing case
LOS ANGELESThe
preliminary hearing that was set for late December in the case of two
Jewish Defense League (JDL) members who allegedly planned to blow up a
mosque and the offices of a prominent Arab-American congressman was
waived by prosecuting attorneys and attorneys representing the accused. At Final Call press
time, JDL Chairman Irving Rubin and West Coast Coordinator Earl Krugel were being held without bond in the Los Angeles Metropolitan
Detention Center.
A celebration of a sister soldier
LOS ANGELESTwo families became one as over 500
Muslims, friends and business acquaintances joined Cylenna Muhammads
three siblings Jan. 5 to celebrate her life at the Angelus Funeral Home
in the Crenshaw District. Sis. Cylenna, 29, was killed Dec. 25 when the
single-engine plane she was traveling in experienced engine trouble and
crashed just off the coast of San Diego.

For over two decades, TransAfrica Forum has challenged
policymaking seen as detrimental to the economic and political
health of Africa and the Caribbean. With the recent appointment of
Bill Fletcher as TransAfricas president, replacing founder Randall
Robinson, and the appointment of activist/actor Danny Glover as
board chairman, the lobby is moving in a new direction. Mr. Fletcher
recently sat down with Final Call staffer Eric Ture Muhammad to
discuss the direction and TransAfricas declared war on "Global
Economic Apartheid."
