Black leaders the ultimate targets of Bush's new anti-civil rights laws?
WASHINGTON�Political,
civic and religious activists met here Dec. 11 to sound the alarm that
not enough Black leaders are raising their voices to the fact that new
laws limiting a range of civil liberties ultimately will target them.
"This is a real and imminent threat," Rev.Al Sharpton told
The Final
Call. "I heard Ashcroft testify at the Senate hearings
where he told the Senate that in times of war they don't even have to
report to them. What they are doing is attempting to legalize COINTELPRO
that the government has used on everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King to
the Black Panther Party.

Defense League chairman arrested
Plot to blow up L.A. mosque
LOS ANGELES�Two top members of the Jewish Defense
League (JDL) were arrested without incident Dec. 11 in connection with a
failed terrorist plot to bomb a Muslim mosque and offices of
Arab-Americans. JDL Chairman Irving Rubin, 56, and West Coast Coordinator, Earl
Krugel, 59, both members of the Los Angeles chapter, were taken into
custody during an evening raid of Mr. Krugel�s home and garage by FBI
special agents and Los Angeles Police Dept. officers.
Grim realities for Blacks, Latinos at
Ground Zero
GROUND ZER0, N.Y.�Anger, frustration and
disappointment characterize the feelings of many Black and Latino
victims and family members of victims here as the three-month
anniversary of the horrific attack against the World Trade Center was
celebrated. All of the complaints are not solely centered on the blatant absence
of Black and Latino victims and their families in the media coverage.
Many have voiced their concern about how the service agencies are
handling their paper work.

election leaves Trinidad and Tobago in limbo
PORT OF SPAIN (IPS)�Six years ago, Arthur Robinson used a
two-seat parliamentary toehold to break an electoral tie and establish a
coalition government. Today, as president, he was given the task of
picking a premier and settling a dead heat in which the governing United
National Congress (UNC) and main Peoples National Movement (PNM)
opposition parties claimed victory.
