Black
scholars, activists challenge motives of U.S. government
DETROITThere is still a
battle against drug sales and drug use in America. But the real war is
for the countrys drug budgetmoney that nearly every part of the
federal bureaucracy receives, say those who want stronger public health
policies, social services and economic development to stem the drug
crisis. The nations leading analysts on drug war reform say
both President George W. Bush and former President Bill Clintons $20
billion drug budgets far surpass President Ronald Reagans $1.5
billion and Richard Nixons $65 million drug budgets.

On "Slavery" In
The Sudan
by Guest Columnist Cedric
Muhammad
The entire debate over what
is happening in Sudan is filled with one of the deepest mixtures of
half-truths, misinformation and religious bias to be found anywhere.
This is particularly true in the United States where the discussion
usually boils down to whether or not slavery exists in the Sudan. The
simple answer to that question is yes. "Slavery" as defined by
White conservatives and Christian fundamentalists in the West and
increasingly by a growing number of Black civil rights activists does
exist in the Sudan and it has for some time.
Mbeki faces new
challenges as new elections approach
(FinalCall.com)--The
introduction of majority rule in South Africa and the election of Nelson
Mandela as the countrys first African president was heralded world
wide. In fact, many observers feel that if there had been no
constitutional provision that limited him to two terms in office, Mr.
Mandela would, perhaps, have remained in office, if he chose to. He
would have won such an election due to his charismatic and unblemished
record.

Rev. Leon Sullivan: A
Giant of a man
WASHINGTON
(NNPA)The Rev. Leon Sullivan, the veteran civil rights leader who
created The Sullivan Principles and organized bi-annual
summits between Africans and Black Americans in Africa since 1991, died
April 24 as the sixth of his African-African American summits,
originally slated for May in Abuja, Nigeria, had been postponed.
It is my fathers wish that we continue our efforts in his
mission and keep his fight for Africa, particularly the sixth
African-African American Summit, on course, Hope Sullivan-Rose,
the reverends daughter, said in a statement.
