All eyes on L.A. for Saviours' Day

LOS ANGELES (FinalCall.com)Imam W.D. Mohammed, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and their communities will embrace once again during Saviours Day 2002, a five-day gathering that will bring thousands of visitors to the city.

Imam Mohammed, a son of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, is scheduled to deliver the Friday congregational Juumah prayer service on Feb. 15. During Saviours Day 2000 in Chicago, Imam Mohammed and Min. Farrakhan delivered messages of unity during a Friday Juumah service and during Sunday keynote addresses.

"This represents the reunification of the Nation of Islam that was the vision of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), that there would be one Islam," said Nation of Islam Assistant Western Region Minister Charles Muhammad.

Min. Charles also is the regional prison reform minister who has worked closely with members of Imam Mohammeds Muslim American Society to help reform inmates in the states penal system.

The reunification of the Nation of Islam in the west is a clear sign to Muslims in the east that there is a need for unity and a healing of the wounds, he said, referring to the theme of Saviours Day weekend, "Healing the Wounds to Create a Universal Family."

From infants to adults, there will be something for all to enjoy during Saviours Day, as an impressive number of educators, celebrities, religious scholars, and law and finance experts share their knowledge during presentations and workshops.

Honorary co-chairs for the event are actor/comedian Steve Harvey, designer Karl Kani, business mogul Earvin "Magic" Johnson and hiphop guru Russell Simmons. Workshop presenters include motivational author/talk show host Iyanla Vanzant; Kwanzaa founder Dr. Maulana Karenga; activist the Rev. Al Sharpton; historian Ashra Kweisi and wife Merira; Rev. Della Reese; Mother Tynnetta Muhammad, wife of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad; Min. Ava Muhammad and Dr. Abdul Alim Muhammad, among others.

Other activities include a gang summit, a childrens village, a hip hop concert, all-day health fairs and a banquet honoring the Farrakhan family.

Ms. Vanzant, who continues to inspire millions of women and men nationwide with her motivational books, will be a presenter at the "Male-Female Relationships" workshop. She will team up with Nation of Islam Minister Rasul Muhammad, a son of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, and Dr. Rosie Milligan, an author and owner of one of few Black, female-owned publishing companies.

On Feb. 15, interfaith unity will be the order of the day as Min. Ishmael Muhammad, Father Fernando Azriti (St. Brigid Catholic Church) and Bishop Kenneth C. Ullmer (Faithful Central Bible Church) unite with other religious leaders for the "Children of AbrahamStanding United With All of Gods Children" sessions scheduled for the morning and afternoon after Juumah prayer service.

And for families of loved ones who are incarcerated, or anyone who desires to learn more about the criminal justice system, judge and TV personality Greg Mathis (The Judge Mathis Show) will join Nation of Islam National Prison Reform Minister Abdullah Muhammad, Imam Antar Jannah, president of the African American Muslim Chaplain Association, Dr. Donald Evans, director of National Association of Brothers and Sisters In and Out (NABSIO) and others to stress the importance of family prayer, communication and general support necessary to help inmates cope with day-to-day challenges of life in prison.

Youth participants will find hosts, presenters and facilitators of the same age at many of their workshops, because children understand children, said Sis. Rita Muhammad, youth workshop coordinator.

She and co-coordinator Sis. Regina Muhammad believe that all children should participate in at least one activity so they are reflected in the convention. "It is important that they see themselves in this major, historic occasion because, after all, the ultimate aim is the youth," she stated.

Sisters Rita and Regina and a host of developers have designed intricate workshops to educate, excite, rejuvenate and entertain children of all ethnicities and spiritual foundations, and ranging from ages 5-18. They include a Chumash Native American show, Islamic storytelling, fine arts in violin, guitar and piano, karate, a talent show, AIDS awareness, a basketball tournament and a session with former gang members and sheriffs.

Parents may take advantage of banner hotel childcare services under the guidance and administration of Sis. Jennifer Muhammad to enjoy scheduled evening entertainment such as the jazz, hip-hop, oldies and youth concerts.

Sis. Jennifer, the veteran principal of Kiddie Land Preschool in South Central L.A., said parents can take comfort in knowing that professional, dedicated, loving and licensed childcare specialists will be watching over their little ones while they enjoy all that Saviours Day 2002 has to offer. Parents need not lodge at the various hotels to take advantage of the childcare services.

Shuttle service will be available to take conventioneers to various workshops and events. Vendors will showcase various wares from jewelry, soaps and perfumes, fashions, books, CDs and tapes, food and games. For deadlines on hotels, cars, vending and schedules, log on to the official Saviours Day 2002 website at www.noiwest.org.
