conference focuses on global economic, political power & leadership
ATLANTA �Not since the Pan-African Conference of Manchester,
England in 1945, some have said, has there been such a concentrated
debate on challenges facing Blacks in Africa, the United States,
Caribbean and Diaspora. The State of the Black World Conference held,
Nov. 28-Dec. 2, at the Georgia International Convention Center sought to
bring Black issues to the forefront as the world is preoccupied with war
and terrorism.
Blacks, Latinos want power posts in N.Y. city council
NEW YORK �While much attention has been paid to
the victory of Republican Mayor Michael Bloomfield, political observers
here say Blacks and Latinos can garner power by capturing the speaker�s
seat and powerful committee chairmanships in the N.Y. city council. "Blacks must continue to press for accountability from the political
process, even though we were unable to get Freddie Ferrer elected
mayor," Brooklyn community activist Sonny Carson told The Final Call.
UN deadlocked on anti-terror treaty
UNITED NATIONS (IPS)�The United Nations remains deadlocked on
a major international treaty against terrorism because of sharp
political divisions among member states. "The simple fact is that terrorism means different things to
different people," said one diplomat from a developing country, on
condition of anonymity. "We couldn�t find common political ground on
several issues�despite the fact that the entire world is preoccupied
with international terrorism."
Arafat pressured as Israel retaliates
THE WHITE HOUSE �With the tacit approval of
President George W. Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had
ordered F-16 fighter jets to attack the police headquarters and the
offices of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat in the West
Bank town of Jenin at Final Call press time Dec. 3.
