Corporate
race-based pricings drain pockets of Black consumers
Blacks are shelling out more green for major financial
services, according to new data that shows skin color matters more than
the color of money. Evidence of raced-based pricing exists in life, home and auto
insurance, auto purchasing and bank lending. Language shifts, members of
these industries say, only cover the reality that Blacks are paying
more. While national efforts have developed to create fairer rates and
policies, financial experts say consumer education is the key to
stopping systematic rip-offs.

Youth oppose 'super jail for
children'
OAKLANDAs county officials plan the construction of
the largest per capita juvenile hall in the country, youth protesters
are feverishly organizing against the building of what they term a
"super jail for children." Alameda County, home to the city of
Oakland and the place where most of the countys juvenile offenders come
from, is planning to build a $117 million, 540-bed juvenile detention
center. This would give the modest-sized county the largest juvenile hall
per capita in the country.
