Ten years after uprising, Blacks discuss
how far L.A. has come and how far it must go
LOS ANGELES—A decade after the uprising here
that set South Central L.A. ablaze, residents, grassroots activists,
political leaders, clergy, and city officials gathered at the Lucy
Florence Coffee House April 27 for a KJLH-FM 102.3 two-hour Town Hall
meeting to reflect on the tragic three-day incident. Hosted by Jacquie
Stephens, it was one of many forums and discussions on the 10-year
anniversary of the uprising that focused a spotlight on race relations,
police brutality, racial inequality and the depth of Black frustration.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (IPS)—The university cafeteria at
the University of Sharjah has stopped selling soft drinks manufactured
by U.S. multinationals, and instead stocks other beverages produced in
the country or region. The American economy is "surviving on Arab money, which is used to
supply the Israelis with monetary and military assistance to kill the
Palestinians who are resisting the occupation for 50 years," Nawal Jasim,
head of the Women Students’ Union at the university, said in explaining
the boycott.

Landowners declare victory in Nissan war

charges of racism and discrimination over land wanted for the $930 million
Nissan project is over. Five Black families recently declared victory over
the state of Mississippi and Nissan’s failed efforts to take their
property through eminent domain.

firms rip-off computer users in Africa
NAIROBI (IPS)—African Internet users are being forced by western
companies to pay the full cost of connecting to the World Wide Web, while
European and American users pay nothing. This is one of the main hurdles
blamed for the slow spread of the Internet on the world’s poorest
continent. “This is exploitation. These networks are raping Africa
of half a billion dollars a year,” said Richard Bell, chairperson of
Kenya’s Internet Service Providers (ISP) Association.
