Profiling and Police Brutality:
Still a 911 for Blacks
New Jersey activists say state is Ground Zero!

NEWARK�Like a number of domestic issues, racial profiling and police brutality have taken a back seat to the war on terrorism since September 11, 2001. Activists, however, say a lack of media focus does not mean serious violations have ended.  �What I am hearing from my people is that in the post September 11 environment, racial profiling and police brutality problems are getting worse,� said Ron Hampton, president of the National Black Police Association, who is based in Washington, D.C. In particular, he has heard of increased profiling of Blacks at airports and at border crossings between Canada and Detroit.

Improved prospects for peace in Sudan?
KHARTOUM�Peace can break out in Sudan if any of several initiatives underway to end Africa�s longest on-going rebellion are successful. Ironically, the Sudanese government, rebels fighting the war in southern regions of this, Africa�s largest country, as well as independent observers all agree that the expected return of U.S. Special Envoy John Danforth on Jan. 13 is one of the more hopeful signs.  The Clinton administration�s agenda sought to topple Sudan�s National Islamic Front government, several Sudanese officials recently complained to members of a delegation of Blacks from the United States. more

JAKARTA�Muslim leaders, scholars and representatives from around the world gathered here recently in the capital city of Indonesia and called for the immediate cessation of the mischievous attacks and malicious linkage of Islam by the avowed antagonists of Islam in the media to the horrendous terrorist Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.  All participants at the two-day summit concurred that justice for Muslims and all the world�s oppressed peoples is the primordial factor in eliminating terrorism, which is not the monopoly of any ethnicity or religion. more
