Mr. Powell's high place dilemma
The struggle of Black America for freedom,
justice and equality puts those Blacks who attain prominent government
positions in a precarious position. They must parrot the government�s
foreign and domestic policies, whether they agree with them or not.
That�s the position Secretary of State Colin Powell, a descendant of
African slaves, finds himself in today. After being told that he could
not participate in the UN World Conference Against Racism being held
Aug. 31-Sept. 7 in Durban, South Africa, Mr. Powell himself, we are
told, on Sept. 3 pulled the low-level delegation sent to the conference
to observe only.

WASHINGTON�Sixteen recently
declassified U.S. government documents published Aug. 20, along with a
harrowing investigative report detailing U.S. foreknowledge of the Rwandan
genocide of 1994, confirm earlier findings reported exclusively last April

N.Y. Blacks, Latinos see hope in council
elections
NEW YORK (Finalcall.com)�When voters go to the polls in New York
City Sept. 11, they will find many new names on the ballot for the
office of City Council. Observers say this election is significant
because for the first time in memory, most political offices in the city
will be wide open, drawing people who have neither money nor
connections.
60 Minutes' slanders Muslims,
activists say
WASHINGTON� American Muslims, who have long
insisted that the popular news media intentionally dehumanizes them, are
now claiming to have indisputable evidence of that practice. The CBS News show "60 Minutes" apparently doctored the English
translation of an interview with a Palestinian who recruits suicide
bombers, Muslim activists charge, to make it appear that he was
motivated by the prospect of enjoying "paradise with 70 virgins,"
according to the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPAC).
