on the National Mall in Washington
In
1995, when the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan called for a million
Black men to descend upon the nations capital for a day of
atonement, reconciliation and responsibility, it was not the Minister
who was making the call. It was a powerful God Who was using this man
as an instrument to perform His will.
The result of that call is history. Nearly two
million men came to Washington in the largest, most peaceful civil
demonstration in the nations history.
God is great.
God Almighty once again demonstrated his Will
through his servant on the Mall in the capital of the strongest
military power on earth when families from across the countryof
different faiths and racesdescended on Washington on Oct. 16 for a
day of family reconciliation and a day of calling all families back to
God.
The Million Family March, with Min. Farrakhan at
the helm, was one of the most peaceful and diverse demonstrations of
unity ever to occur in this nation.
Yet, the opposition was thick, it was tangible.
There was murder in the air just as it was for the Million Man March.
It began with the virtual "white out" of
the pre-march mobilization efforts. In lock step, the forces that
control the media of this country learned that their coverage of
events leading up to the Million Man March, though mostly negative and
intended to discourage participation, actually helped to fuel
participation. They obviously vowed not to make that mistake again.
The most telling example of the medias intent
was a major Oct. 9 press conference in New York called by Min.
Farrakhan upon his return from a trip to Africa for the purpose of
helping to bring peace to the war-torn Congo and other regions of the
Mother Continent. He also talked about the crisis in the Middle East
and the mobilization for the Million Family March, which was seven
days away.
Even though all major news outlets were represented
at a news conference by a major public figure speaking on serious
topics on one of the slowest news day of the yearthe Columbus Day
holidayyou could hardly tell that the event occurred if you read
the papers or watched the television news. All were quiet.
And throughout the negotiations with the city of
Washington, hurdle after hurdle after hurdle had to be cleared. The
ultimate sign that Oct. 16 was a day that the Lord was making came in
the form of a 11th hour joint resolution passed by both houses of
Congress allowing for Jumbotron screens to be set up on the Capitol
building grounds.
The recalcitrance of the forces opposing the march
was demonstrated when Min. Farrakhan, convener of the march, was
scanned for weapons with hand-held wands by reluctant Black Capitol
Police officers taking orders from on high. What was their aim in
performing this disrespectful act? Did they hope to provoke an
incident?
Still, when Min. Farrakhan descended the steps of
the Capitol toward the podium to deliver the keynote address, a joyful
noise rose from the throng of people spread across Mall who had come
to give honor to God and to honor the man in whom Gods word is
deposited, thanking him for having the vision to call a day to show
the world what peace among the peoples of the world looks like.
Despite the massive opposition to both marches and
the ultimate success of both, the victory should be a clear signal to
those wicked forces arrayed against Minister Farrakhan that there is a
higher power backing him. Surely if he were standing of himself, those
forces that have been viciously arrayed against him, particularly in
the last 16 years, would have demolished him, as they have done other
leaders who spoke to the hurt of the oppressed. But their media cannot
destroy him. The traps they have set for his demise all have been
failures. Their slander has been swallowed up.
Min. Farrakhan is a man enveloped in God. The
Million Man March and the Million Family March are clear testaments to
this fact. If given the chance, his message can preserve this nation.
If opposition persists, they will be destroyed.
