(FinalCall.com)�"But Mom, what about us?" will not be
the cry ringing out at World Saviours� Day 2002 Convention and Expo. The
weeklong event will highlight babies and youth with childcare and
workshops tailor-made for them.
Multicultural storytellers will kick off ages 5-18 youth programs on
Feb. 15 along with the Chumash Native American Show. The children will
also create a video letter to the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, in
lieu of personal handwritten letters. Children workshops will include
business and banking, science and respecting differences.
"It�s critical that our children know what it means to handle
finances, run a household, and business affairs," Sis. Capt. Regina
Muhammad of Mosque No. 54 in Compton stated. "We want them to be able to
respect each other�s uniqueness, not just racial, but their different
handicaps, such as required use of wheelchairs, blindness, etc.," she
added.
Former gang members and L.A. County Sheriffs will be on hand for
questions and answers on the perils of gang life and seeking a way out.
Sis. Capt. Regina said she wants the children to walk away informed,
educated, and with a desire to achieve, knowing they have a support base
and that they are the future.
Children ages 2-4, accompanied by parents, can join other youth at
the Children�s Village equipped with bouncers, train rides,
face-painting and dancing clowns, basketball, dancing, games, jungle
gyms, a giant slide, and arts and crafts.
Gary Jones and The YUPPETS (Young Urban Professional Puppets) are
scheduled to perform Feb. 16 at the Convention Center. The troupe of
over 100 yuppets are all hand-made and have wowed youth and adults since
1974.
She said childcare hours (at banner hotels and the Convention Center)
are suited around parents� convention activities. At a minimal fee,
services will be available Feb. 13 (4:30-11:30p.m.) during the Musical
Tribute to Humanity, Feb. 15 (8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.-12:00
a.m.) during workshops and for the First Family Of Love banquet. Feb.
16 services are set for 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and will be at the
Convention Center only.
