Imam W.
Deen Mohammed, son of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, will join the
Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan Feb. 24-27 during the Nation of Islams
Saviours Day Convention, the Muslim Journal newspaper reported.
In a center-spread interview in its Jan. 28 edition, Imam Mohammed
said he has been praying for Min. Farrakhans recovery from
complications caused by prostate cancer treatment, and that he has
accepted Min. Farrakhans invitation to participate in the Nation of
Islams Saviours Day celebration. The Imam noted that he plans to
attend the Feb. 25 Jumah prayer service at the McCormick Convention
Center and the Ministers Feb. 27 keynote address at the United
Center.
"We are thanking Allah (God) for his improvement and pray that
he continues to improve," Imam Mohammed told interviewer Nathaniel
Omar.
Concerning the Saviours Day weekend celebration, he said, "I
have been invited to join Minister Farrakhan, who will give the address
on Feb. 27. I plan to be there and join him and give my support and also
to celebrate with him, a big celebration, and I see it as a Saviours
Day Celebration."
Imam Mohammed said that while he has not met personally with the
Minister concerning Saviours Day, the two have had discussions about
the weekend activities, and plan to meet personally in the near future.
"We should all be there joining them on Feb. 27, hearing the
major address given by Minister Farrakhan. I dont see myself having
any difficulties with any of the concerns he itemized. I support his
whole program" for the weekend, the Imam said.
Imam Mohammed added that he supports the weekends focus on family
and he also supports Min. Farrakhans call for a Million Family March
on Oct. 16 in Washington, D.C., the fifth anniversary of the Million Man
March.
"We need more awareness of our obligation as parents and of our
obligation as adults in our communities," he said.
Imam Mohammed said his father, the Hon. Elijah Muhammadwhom he
noted was cited by Chicago Magazine and the Chicago Sun Times newspaper
among the hundred most influential people on the history of the cityfought
for freedom, justice and equality and must be seen as a man "with
the peoples deficiencies and social illness on his mind and on his
heart."
"The Honorable Elijah Muhammad sincerely worked for the
betterment of the African-American people," he said.
"I know that Minister Farrakhan is very pleased with Imam
Mohammeds acceptance of the invitation and we believe that many
Muslims in America, those who follow the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and
those who follow Imam Mohammed, long for greater unity," commented
Nation of Islam Chief of Staff Leonard F. Muhammad, adding that the
Minister will make a statement in a future edition of The Final Call.
Imam Mohammed and Min. Farrakhan have embraced publicly in past
years, including an appearance by the Imam at the Nation of Islams
Oct. 7, 1986 Saviours Day celebration of the birth of the Hon. Elijah
Muhammad and during Jumah prayer at last years February Saviours
Day celebration.
