No matter how much time passes, and sometimes it seems
no matter how much we think we have learned, every now and then some
one can push a button and we will automatically react, not
haphazardly, but in a well planned and programmed manner. The reader
may or may not be acquainted with some of my taped lectures, such as "IM
DREAMING OF A CAUCASIAN CHRISTMAS" or "THE PLAYBOY EASTER
BUNNY", but I find us approaching another so-called "holiday"
(which is derived from the term "Holy Day"). I have never dealt with
it in depth, as I have so many other "holidays", so I figure it is
about time we performed a cursory examination to see what it is that
we are truly paying tribute to on "Mothers Day."
The earliest recorded celebrations of "Mothers Day"
have been traced back to ancient Greece, and were held in honor of
"Rheathe Mother of the Gods." The Romans reportedly called the
celebration "Hilaria", and, unlike the Greek version, was a religious
celebration, which lasted from March 15th to 18th. The Chaldeans called
her "Semiramis", while others referred to her as "VenusThe Mother of
all impurity." According to Greek mythology, she was the mother of Zeus,
Chief of the Gods, who is also well known as "Jupiter". Reportedly, her
other offspring included Hestia (Vesta), Demeter (Ceres), Hera (Juno),
Hades (Pluto) and Poseidon (Neptune). She also is identified as the
mother of twins, fathered by Mars. Romulus, founder and first King of
Rome, killed his twin brother, Remus.
She was the mother of Tammuz, who was so wicked that
God, in Ezekiel 8:14, called the women who wept for this wicked man "an
abomination". He was well known for his drunken orgies, and his other
name, Bacchus, gave rise to a term for drunken orgies"Baccanalia".
Various versions of these histories may be found in
literature from many places and times. In Babylonia and Egypt (Isis and
Osiris), India (Isi and Iswara), throughout Asia (Cybele and Deoius),
Pagan Rome (Fortuna and Jupiter), Greece (Cere and "the babe" or Irene
and Pluto) and China (Shing Moo and Child).
It is only my personal opinion, but I think we would do
much better if we decided to treat our mothers in such a way, all year
round, that they will know that they are appreciated every day, and not
just when the merchants want to bleed another few dollars out of us!
